Physical Education

Subject Leader: Mr Jones - djones@tqacademy.co.uk

AIMS OF THE PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

  • Build upon many of the competences and knowledge established in KS3, with a continuation of several sports/activities.
  • Pupils are also introduced to new sporting activities, providing more complex and demanding physical activities. Some of these activities will have clear links to the sports/activities experienced at KS3, and whilst several will be very different, there is a clear overlap regarding the skills, rules, tactics and strategies with activities performed previously.
  • Students experience a diverse range of activities that develop their personal fitness and promote an active, healthy lifestyle.
  • Students will understand the importance of staying fit and healthy, but also have connected with a sport or activity that they can pursue beyond school, either recreationally or competitively.

OVERVIEW OF KEY STAGE 3 CURRICULUM

The KS3 curriculum is designed to enable students to become more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, with 8 sports/activities covered. Students are provided with opportunities to understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles.

They develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life, and understand and apply the long-term health benefits of physical activity.

They experience competition through a range of team and individual games and understand how to use a range of tactics and strategies to overcome opponents.

They develop their technique and performance in other competitive sports and are also provided with opportunities to perform in dance and gymnastics and are presented with intellectual and physical challenges through OAA.
