Adventure Academy
What it is:
Adventure Academy includes all of the awesome outdoor activities that we offer here at Torquay Academy. The teachers that plan and run these activities have the same qualifications that the outdoor industry professionals have and the equipment available is as good, often better than, the equipment you’d find at an outdoor centre. The following activities are just some of what we do here but by the nature of some of these activities, not all of them are available to Year 7s but you will have the chance to do these activities throughout your time at TA.
The benefits of joining:
At Torquay Academy, we believe that the benefits of joining the Adventure Academy extend far beyond the classroom. This unique programme is designed for secondary age children, providing them with opportunities to develop essential life skills, enhance their teamwork capabilities, and build resilience through engaging outdoor activities. By participating in the Adventure Academy, students not only gain valuable experiences that foster personal growth but also cultivate a deeper connection with nature and their peers.
Climbing:
We have our own climbing wall and regularly go on trips to climb (and abseil) outdoors.
Mountain Biking:
We have our own set of bikes and regularly take trips to Haldon.
Coasteering:
We have wetsuits, buoyancy aids, helmets etc and we run trips at Anstey’s Cove.
Kayaking:
We have our own boats, buoyancy aids and paddles (so you don’t get stuck up a creek without one!) We paddle on the Dart near Totnes.
Ten Tors:
Every year we enter multiple teams in Ten Tors which is a legendary navigation, hiking and wild camping challenge organised by the Army.
Duke of Edinburgh:
We run bronze, silver and gold which ranges from Year 9s on coastal paths to the older students up in the mountains.
