Oliver!, Year 13 Prom and welcoming Year 6s...
Oliver!
Students from every year group took part in our amazing production of Oliver! this year in The Platform. Performances by every member of the cast were simply incredible. The vocals were spectacular and they were accompanied by some wonderful dancing and acting. The audience on both nights of the show was very grateful to have been treated to such a spectacular performance. It is such a privilege to watch the students develop over the course of the year as the countless hours of rehearsals pay dividends.

Catering for the Year 7 celebration evening
Some of our Hospitality and Catering students in years 9 and 10 produced some excellent canapes for the Year 7 Celebration Evening. They used their front and back of house skills to showcase the bruschettas – mozzarella and tomato, cream cheese and cucumber and last but certainly not least pastrami and rocket. Parents were also served a lovely glass of elderflower sparkly water which was very well received on a warm summer evening.
The amount of work and effort that went into the production and presentation was second to none and we are very proud of the way they spoke to parents about their creations. They certainly demonstrated the skills you need to become a successful employee in the business. Well done, everyone, they tasted delicious!

Hannah is using a French dictionary to help her figure out the French vocabulary she doesn’t know.
Harry has highlighted the cognates and French words he already knows in the text which is about being a host city for the Olympic Games and the argument for and against it. By doing this it can help him understand the meaning of the text.
A little treat for the students to get an idea of what is really important in French culture – the food!
Enjoying the well-deserved macarons together.
Wellbeing ambassador training
On Monday we had the pleasure of welcoming the Mental Health support team to Torquay Academy. They ran a four hour training session for 24 year 7s students who gained a real understanding of how to support wellbeing not only for themselves but for their peers. The plan is for the students to support the new year 7s in September in the transition from primary school to secondary. The feedback from the students was really positive: “It was really good because it taught us how to deal with the year 6’s starting school and what we need to do to help them”. Lauren and Tracey from MHST have been working with our pastoral team over the last few months in supporting our students. They run 1:1 sessions with identified students as well as group sessions.
Mr Crow’s Classics Club
Having spent the last few months studying the basics of Latin, the group have recently been exploring a range of ancient cultural topics that piqued their interest and sense of humour. This week they had time for three presentations.
Olivia Walters talked to the group about ancient fishing and the central importance that fish and fishing played in many ancient diets and cultures.
Olivia Hosking, continuing a surprising group enthusiasm for food, gave us a presentation on bread and yeast in Egyptian civilisation.
Finally, Poppy Hedworth explored the ways that cats were viewed in the ancient world, particularly the way in which they were respected and worshipped within ancient Egypt.
Student spokespersons from each house
In this penultimate week of term, Miss Risk has been interviewing some students who have completed their first year with us here at Torquay Academy. Her aim was to discover what they really thought about the house to which they belong.
Abigail Hytche – Brunel
’It is really good fun to be in Brunel as people are intelligent, with great ideas. Mrs Haines is strict but funny too and she is very competitive. Brunel is the best house because we won the Countdown. Belonging to Brunel has helped me settle in as I know my group well and have a sense of familiarity.’
Jayden Thistlewaite – Fawcett
‘The best thing about Fawcett is that we all get along as a group. People in the house are funny and decent. We had top attendance one week and Miss Piggot -our house captain -always has good ideas.’
Ollie Payne – Kitson
‘We have lots of fun in Kitson as our house captain, Mr Yao, has a good sense of humour. There are always plenty of volunteers for every event and everybody has great ideas. We must be the best house as we won the Bake Off.
Olivia Mae Franke- Nearne
‘Nearne is a friendly and funny group with a great house captain and a really good selection of people. There are many comedy characters in the house. We always have a good selection of people who volunteer for every event and people have played a big role in Student Voice this year. Although we have not yet one an event, we are still the best house.’
Lana Waller – Harrison
‘Miss Felton is really organised and always encourages us to do well. We all make a good effort with the Spring Fayre. Our house leader, Mr Penrice is great. We are definitely the best house as we won TA’s got Talent.’
Summer Holmes- Darwin
‘Mrs Lynch is very, very competitive; she is funny and loud and supports us all. We have lots of volunteers for every event and take things really seriously. We work together with organisational skills and -although we haven’t won an event yet- we raised the most money for our charity-Animals in Distress at the Spring Fayre. I would say we make a good collective effort. We must also mention our house leader, Doctor Hocking, as he always wears his red suit when he presents the awards on Fridays.’
Alex Nagy- Pengelly
‘Pengelly is the best house. Mrs Lancaster is really nice; she has a sense of humour and she wears her purple jacket on Fridays. Mr Chadwick also dresses up every week. People who are in Pengelly enjoy being in the house and are very proud. We always have lots of people who want to do things.. Our biggest victory was that we won Battle of the Brains which was the first house event.’
Ollie Neale -Christie
‘We are usually at the top in the competitions and if we don’t win, we usually come second. We won Blockbusters and came second in Battle of the Brains. Our house is very good at sports and we have lots of sporty people and plenty of people who will volunteer for every event. We have a good house captain, Mr Hills, who is always behind us.’
Tubers
Our students recorded their first podcast this week. This gave them the opportunity to put together all of their knowledge from their previous sessions.

Students from the Academy were fortunate enough to be invited to the County Ground in Taunton to spectate at a one-off Test Match between England Women and South Africa Women. It was the first time any of the students had been to an international cricket game and all thoroughly enjoyed the day and the experience. England won the toss and decided to bowl first. A good decision as wickets fell regularly before lunch. As the weather improved, so did the batting conditions and we were treated to an excellent inning from the South African, Kapp, who went on to score an unbeaten 150 no. Mr Penrice and Mr Foulds commented on how well the students represented the Academy and reported back the positive comments he had received from the staff at the ground The match ended as a draw.
