Fastest in England, Future Lioness & England netball call up

Listen

Keeley is the fastest U17 sprinter in England

Keeley won the under 17 100m in 12.66 sec at the Devon open track and field meeting in Plymouth, later followed by a stunning win in the 300m, setting a massive new Personal Best time of 38.92 sec.

This time sets a new All Time South-West best performance, which had stood for 13 years, and currently ranks Keeley the fastest under-17 300m sprinter in England. Congratulations Keeley!

Netball and Football Success

Congratulations to Mia Denby, in Year 12, who has gained a place in the England Colleges team for Netball.  This is an incredible achievement and she has already played in Ireland this year.

Farrah Ambrose, Year 9, has been selected for the Football Lioness pathway. This builds on the great success she has had for both the school and Devon.

I am very proud of the success of all of our girls, who have made this the most successful sporting year for our girls in the school’s history.

These are some great pictures from the recent Greenpower race.

Year 11 Exams

Year 11 are well and truly in the final stretch of their GCSE exams with only a few taking place next week. They have continued to work really hard and have made a real impression on staff.  On Saturday around 50 came in for some final preparation ahead of their Monday exam (Maths Paper 3). The amount of revision that has been taking place before school and during break times has been amazing.  The Year 11 team are so proud of the year group and are excited to see the results of their hard work on results day.  Well done Year 11!

Year 9 HPA

On Monday, the Year 9 High Performance Academy students met in the Platform for their end-of-year celebration. Students gave presentations to each other on subjects they had been researching in HPA this year using online university courses from universities such as Harvard, Edinburgh and UCL. The presentations were extremely well-researched and confidently delivered on a range of subjects such as the development of antibiotics, different punitive models of criminal justice and classical mythology. Students also celebrated their hard work this year by eating lots of pizza in the sixth form cafe! Amazon vouchers as prizes for the best research were awarded to Harrison Harkin (Investment Law), Ben Jeffs (The Individual in Chinese Culture), Rebecca Quarshie (The Pyramids of Giza) and Lauren Tanton (Chernobyl). Well done to everyone involved for an extremely impressive year with HPA!

TA go Coasteering

It’s official…. We’re now a school that does Coasteering!

On Friday, a handpicked group of intrepid (and naively trusting) students, bravely and selflessly took the day away from lessons so that Mr Bez could use them as guinea pigs for his National Coasteering Charter Coasteering Guide Award Assessment.

We travelled to Anstey’s Cove to meet the assessor and after the initial formalities we kitted up and headed down to the sea, the day was sunny and the sea was flat, a perfect day for coasteering.  Following the usual route in/through/over the rocks we made our way to increasingly big jumps as students’ skills and confidence increased.  With a falling Spring tide the final jumps became bigger and bigger but all of the students met the challenge with gusto!

All that was left (for the assessment) was a swim test and rescue drills, the students even joined in and could have passed the assessment themselves!

Then it was back to the minibus for handshakes, de-kit and maybe a cheeky ice cream!

Watch this space for more coasteering trips and more instructors passing their Guide award.

SummerFest Pitch

I met with the Sixth Form team who are leading our annual SummerFest.  The music students did a very professional job outlining their vision for SummerFest and I was delighted to be able to give them the funding for it to go ahead.

Year 9 Geography

Miss Fannon’s Year 9 Geographers have been completing Bi polar evaluations of the sea defences at the coast. For this they have evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of sea walls, groynes, rock armour and gabions. This is all part of the Coastal Landscapes Unit in preparation for their fieldwork.

Year 7 Art

Some students in Year 7 have been working with local collage artist Philip Eley in an afterschool art club. They spent the first session playing a drawing game that was similar to Bingo and this week’s session trying to recreate fantastical images by collaging shapes, objects, people and colours found in magazines. The responses are incredibly imaginative and playful…I’m looking forward to hearing about the ideas they have for their own artworks next week!

Year 9 Rounders

The Year 9 rounders team played in an U14 area rounders tournament at Stover school on Wednesday. They played several closely contested matches and secured a win against Newton Abbot College. The girls worked well as a team, adapting their fielding and doing some fantastic catches! They also batted well, with some great hits resulting in scoring lots of rounders.

Well done, girls!
