Buckingham Palace, Wales Tour & Adventure Academy
Gold D of E Celebrations
Emma Harrison was invited to Buckingham Palace for her Gold Duke of Edinburgh celebration. The afternoon was spent listening to inspirational speeches from celebrities, a walk around the gardens, tea and cake and a speech from the Duke of Edinburgh. There was also an opportunity for Emma to meet the Duke of Edinburgh. Emma had a wonderful day and she serves as an inspiration to the many students following the scheme in the school. Well done, Emma.
Adventure Academy
Coasteering and abseiling have been on the menu this week. These are incredible and free opportunities available for our students.
Year 12 Futures Event
Students at Torquay Academy Sixth Form are well supported with regards to their planning and preparation for whichever pathway they choose following their time with us. As part of this support, we held an event last Thursday that aimed to inform students and parents of the options that will be available following their time at Torquay Academy Sixth Form. This included ideas surrounding university or other Higher Education options, apprenticeships and the world of work. With representatives from University of Exeter, Plymouth University, Arts University Plymouth, ASK Apprenticeships and UCSD, it was wonderful to see so many of our students and their families attend in order to take full advantage of the guidance on offer.
Fun Friday
It was jam doughnuts all round this week!
House News
Thursday saw the culmination of our Year 7 Blockbusters house competition. Both finalists, Harrison and Pengelly, have beaten two other teams to get to this stage. Harrison team: Toby Howell, Trent Blackmore, Ruby Fitzgerald and Dolly Gagg battled against Pengelly team: Freddie Fenner, Sam Sanders, Poppy Sanderson and Anastasia Tukilush to win the match. For this competition, the students had to correctly guess which word, beginning with a designated letter, matched a particular clue.
The match was hard fought, with both teams desperate to win. In attendance were: the whole of 7H and 7P, Mrs Hosking, head of Harrison, Mr Chadwick, head of Pengelly, and some of our Sixth Form ambassadors. Ultimately Pengelly emerged victorious.
As always, there were prizes for the individual winners and runners-up and sweets for the whole of 7P. The house-cup now displays purple ribbons and currently resides in 7P’s classroom.
Our final house-competition of the year will take place next half-term.
French with Mrs Berry
In Mrs Berry’s French class, Year 10 have been talking about the environment and other global issues. They have learnt how to say what concerns them most and why. Next, they will be discussing what we must do to solve the world’s problems – all in French. Here are the future world leader’s hard at work!
Meanwhile, Year 11 took a break during their final lesson preparing for their French writing exam after half term, in order to say farewell to our lovely French language assistant, Laurence, who returns to Québec tomorrow. Bon voyage, Laurence, et merci beaucoup pour tout.
Congratulations Luke
This week we bid farewell to a stalwart of the Music Department, year 13 Luke Howard. Luke has truly rounded off his time at TA in style achieving Grade 8 (the highest accomplishment in graded musical exams), with Merit. We all know Luke as an outstanding musician and guitarist but this really proves it. Grade 8 requires a unique level of virtuosity and massive amounts of dedication, his achievement typifies a lifelong dedication to guitar and we could not be prouder.
Luke leaves TA with an offer to study Popular Music at Falmouth.
Word Millionaires
This week we have had two students achieve the status of Word Millionaire, after correctly reading and quizzing on one million words within their reading. Well done to Ayden Goldsbrough (8P) and Gustaw Adamczak (7F)
U15 Netball Academy Tour to Wales
Over the weekend, 10 girls represented the U15 TA Netball Academy on an annual netball trip to Wales. The team had an action-packed 3 days watching a Superleague Netball game, playing in a competitive netball fixture, taking part in team building activities on the beach and jumping around in a trampoline park. Thankfully, the weather was on our side for the whole of the weekend and the only thing that was lost was a pair of glasses to sandcastles on the beach!
Miss Lewis and Mrs Westacott would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Netball Academy, to say how proud we were of every pupil who represented Team TA to a high standard both on and off the netball court. A special congratulations goes to the academy players who won the following awards over the weekend:
Eve Cameron – Coaches Player of the Tour
Lydia Bevan – Opposition’s Player of the Match
Ema Kestell – Player’s Player of the Match
U15 Netball Academy: Maisy Green (C), Elise Pile, Emily Graham, Elspeth Herring, Ella McLachlan, Eve Cameron, Brooke Tully, Ema Kestell, Lydia Bevan and Jemimah Jones
