Alabama, Phantom of the Opera and national finals

Greenpower Alabama Trip

Over the Easter half-term, 10 students of our Greenpower team spent 12 days in Alabama, USA, grasping a taste of the southern culture and enriching in the many possible careers in STEM. After a day’s worth of travelling the boys and girls settled into the homely town of Wetumpka. The team became true American students for a day, undergoing an average school day at Wetumpka HIgh school, learning their curriculum, playing their sports and immersing themselves in the American routine.

Next on the agenda was Barber Motorsports Museum to see so many amazing vehicles from motorsport history.  At the museum they were even permitted to watch cars being tested on the museum’s famous racetrack.

The following day, took an emotional turn when touring incredible sites on the Civil Rights Trail in Montgomery, led by a former cotton picker and veteran of Dr Martin Luther King’s Selma March! This opened their eyes to the harsh reality of racial divide over history. This included the Rosa Parks museum, the Bus Boycott, the Slave Trade, Jim Crow law and much more. The children were horrified by the inexcusable treatment of the ethnic minority across America.

During this visit, Mr Margetts appeared with a surprise appearance to encourage and support the team on their trip.

After this, the students went on a tour around the Kia factory, viewing their futuristic car production line, later on going to the Tuskegee Airman centre, finding out about the repression enacted onto black people within the military during World War 2.

The following day was a true highlight of the trip when our Greenpower enthusiasts were given the opportunity to support elementary school teams in their Goblin races, meeting many new faces to share the tips of our success within Greenpower. They were also surprised with a chance to drive in a race against each other and given many presents from all the amazing American teams.

In the evening, we visited a dirt track race, a southern-speciality! Sunday may have topped this as we visited Six Flags, spiking sugar and adrenaline rushes. We visited the NASA space and Rocket centre where we were treated by a talk form the designer of the Lunar Rover and the Saturn V space rocket, and viewed the solar eclipse!

On the final day, the students toured around Auburn University, showing them the amazing engineering facilities and their 90,000 seater stadium.

Just for good measure, the house was struck by lightning resulting in a lack of utilities for the final day.

What an adventure!

Performing Arts Academy Lights Up London!

This week, our talented Performing Arts Academy (PAA) students embarked on an unforgettable trip to London, experiencing the magic of the city and honing their skills with industry professionals.

The day kicked off bright and early with a 6am departure from PAA. The excitement buzzed in the air as the students set off for Base Dance Studios in London. There, they dived headfirst into a thrilling dance and singing workshop led by a true West End star – Lily De-La-Haye, a current cast member of the iconic Phantom of the Opera!

Following the invigorating workshop, the students took a scenic walk along the River Thames, soaking in the city’s famous landmarks. The London Eye glistened in the sunlight, Big Ben stood tall against the sky, and of course, there was a special stop outside Downing Street for our very own “Prime Minister in waiting,” Kole Gjikolaj.

After building up an appetite from all the excitement, the PAA crew refuelled with a delightful lunch break in the picturesque St James’ Park. With renewed energy, they then made their way to the awe-inspiring His Majesty’s Theatre, the majestic home of The Phantom of the Opera.

The performance itself was undoubtedly a highlight, transporting the students to a world of music, mystery, and captivating storytelling. But the magic didn’t end there! After the show, a truly special surprise awaited the students at the stage door. They were absolutely thrilled to meet Lily De-La-Haye once again, who had generously come out to greet them, even bringing fellow cast members along!

This London trip was a truly special experience for our PAA students. It provided them with invaluable exposure to the heart of the performing arts industry, as well as the opportunity to learn from a West End star and witness a world-class production. We are incredibly proud of our talented students who were exceptional the whole day.

Talented Artist Wiktoria

Talented Year 7 artist Wiktoria Aleksander has produced a painting of her cat, Valentine at Mrs Lithgow’s art club after school on Tuesdays over the last few months. It has been selected from over 20,000 entries to be exhibited as part of the Royal Academy of Art’s Young Artist’s Summer Show online. Wiktoria wrote “Valentine is a very curious and silly cat. She always finds a way to make things more interesting and fun when it’s boring! Whenever I come home Valentine is always waiting on a chair to welcome me (she likes to talk too!) Her amber eyes always remind me of a sunset and how she sits on top of the wardrobe blinking at me”. Look out for the online exhibition which will be launched on Tuesday 16th July 2024 – https://youngartists.royalacademy.org.uk/ Well done Wiktoria!

Ten Tors

We said good luck to our Ten Tors teams on Friday morning.  They also managed to devour a large selection of cakes!  I have no doubt they will need the energy this weekend.

Chicks Progress

Our chicks in the cone are growing bigger by the day.  We think they will be ready to fly the nest soon.  One of our facilities team, Mark, is quite the bird expert and has been keeping an eye on the birds.  He has read that birds that nest in cones can find it impossible to take their first flight up the cone, so he has drilled an escape hatch for them.  Although the placement of the hatch needed to be thought through in order to keep the chicks safe from the resident cat…

TA go Paddling!

My last blog post was in September and we were just about to go paddling…. now.. we’ve been paddling!

About 50 students have had the chance so far and we’re now in peak season so more students are going each week. We begin by issuing the students their kit (the best kit in the business btw – cag, helmet, buoyancy aid, change robe) then we load up and head to Totnes.  Dr Jones leads an initial game to teach the basics of kayak control and then we’re away upstream to the bridge or, if the tide allows, up to the hydro station.  After this lovely bimble we might play a game of kayakball, some students accidentally capsize, some students “accidentally” capsize, the staff (Mr Bez, Dr Jones and Dr O’Hanlon) shovel them back into their boats and then it’s time to get off the water.

Students are usually (a bit) cold, sometimes (a lot) wet, usually (a bit) tired but (nearly) always buzzing after a great activity!!!

CCF

This week’s Torquay Academy cadet session was full of Discipline and Adventure.  Another dynamic cadet training session unfolded at Torquay Academy as our cadets immersed themselves in a diverse range of training activities, embodying the values of discipline, leadership, and adventure.

With the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Army sections each practicing distinct skills, alongside exhilarating kayaking sessions, our cadets showcased their versatility and commitment to personal and collective growth.

The RAF section embarked on intensive training sessions focused on section attacks and drill. These exercises not only sharpened their tactical knowledge but also instilled invaluable discipline.  Through meticulous planning, synchronized movements, and effective communication, our cadets learned to execute precise manoeuvres with confidence and precision.

Meanwhile, the Army cadets delved into a comprehensive training regimen encompassing 2-person sheltering, drill, first aid, and command tasks. From mastering essential survival skills to fine-tuning their ability to lead and collaborate under pressure, each activity underscored the importance of adaptability and resilience in the face of challenges.

Amidst the structured training programs, a spirit of adventure beckoned as some cadets took to the water for kayaking sessions. As they navigated the currents and explored new horizons, they not only embraced the thrill of outdoor pursuits but also cultivated leadership skills by taking on instructional roles, guiding their peers with confidence and expertise.

Beyond the technical proficiency gained, these experiences fostered a sense of camaraderie and mutual support among our cadets, strengthening the bonds that underpin our academy community.

Whether on land or water, each challenge conquered and skill acquired serves as a testament to their dedication and determination.

As we reflect on yet another jam-packed cadet training session, we celebrate the growth and achievements of our cadets, who continue to exemplify the values of leadership, discipline, and adventure.

Ten Tors 2024 has been a focus this week as the cadets pack kit, work through selected route planning and prepare for the weekend endurance challenge.  We all wish them the very best.  Follow their progress on @CCFTorquay and on the TenTors web site.

House Update

On Thursday, 9th May, 8 students from Christie House were invited to visit Rowcroft Hospice. Rowcroft is Christie’s local house charity; students from Christie made a large donation to the organisation last year and are continuing to fundraise.  Callum Pile, Josh Ward, Connor Dean, Lucas Chappell , Anna Pearn, Maile Beavis ,Freya Coatsworth and Isabelle Kelly – all from Year 9 met with fundraising manager Debbi Shotton.

The students were given a tour around the estate, learning about the legacy left by the Rowcroft family. They also learnt about some of the services that Rowcroft offers for both in and outpatients. The highlight of the day was when the students met some of the educators who advised and supported patients with managing daily affairs and had the opportunity to ask questions. Before the students left, they could visit The Sanctuary, a special place on the estate devoted to quiet contemplation and celebration.

All the staff at Rowcroft were so welcoming and kind to our students. The charity is a truly wonderful organisation with the tremendously valuable work they do to support the residents of South Devon.  Our students left feeling they would like to do more to help in the future.

Rowcroft Hospice are having an open day on Sunday 9th June with tours of the garden and refreshments. All funds raised will support the incredible resources that Rowcroft provides.
