OVERVIEW OF KEY STAGE 4 CURRICULUM
Course Title: BTEC Tech Award Health and Social Care Level 1/2

What will I study?
Component 1 - study the areas of growth and development that contribute to the whole person, specifically Physical, Intellectual, Emotional and Social. Reflect on factors and life events that impact life stages such as Religion, Lifestyle , accidents, pregnancy etc.
Component 2 - Learn the range of health and social care services and the barriers people face in accessing them. Gain knowledge regarding the skills, attributes and values needed to work in this area.
Component 3 - Health and well being of individuals and how different lifestyle factors affect this. Learn how to interpret health indicators that can measure certain conditions e.g Asthma, Obesity. Finally, learn how to design and plan health and wellbeing plans , to include short and long term targets.

Course description
Health and Social Care provides students with an interest in any of the caring professions with an invaluable and thoughtful perspective on contemporary issues in health and social care, education and the criminal justice sectors. With the demographics in the UK changing rapidly and the population living longer, the health and social care sectors will experience huge growth over the next few years. For those wishing to work in these sectors, these qualifications provide a solid foundation of knowledge, practical skills and experience.
What will I learn?
The Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A Level; approx. 60% exam, 40% coursework)
Over the two years you will study the following 4 mandatory units: -
Building positive relationships for health and social care, Equality, diversity and rights for health and social care, Health, safety and security for health and social care, Anatomy and physiology for health and social care. Plus 2 Optional Units Sexual Health, Nutrition for Health.
The Diploma (equivalent to two A Levels; approx. 46% exam, 54% coursework).
Over the two years you will study the six units above in addition to the following 6 units:
Infection control, Personalisation and a person centred approach, Safeguarding, Promoting positive behaviour, Impact of Long Term Physiological Conditions, Promoting Health and Well being.
The Extended Diploma (equivalent to three A Levels; approx. 40% exam, 60 % coursework).
Over the two years you will study the twelve units above in addition to the following 5 units:
Creativity and activity for children and young people ,Supporting people with learning disabilities, Caring for Older people, Principles of Youth work practice, Research methods in Health and Social Care (Double unit)

Where could it lead?
Health and Social Care (will prepare you for a number of degree courses in areas such as, health and social care, mental health, nursing, primary teaching, radiography and occupational therapy.
